I have been an elementary and secondary school teacher and administrator. Currently, I am a faculty member in the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. My M.Ed. and Ph.D. had a focus on the educational and linguistic experiences of children who moved from other countries to Canada.

Three week countdown to Haiti summer institute

We are in the final stretch of planning for the Educator and Leadership Institute in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. There are over 200 Haitian teachers and principals registered, 100+ kids registered for the camp, and 20 university students preparing for a conversational English program. Our team of 30 Canadian and 10 US educators is eager to be part of this exciting venture!

Our Canadian and US team is involved in four primary tasks:
  1. Educator and Leadership Institute (all day): Six focus areas of mathematics, science, critical literacy, early learning, special education, and school leadership. Canadian instructors will team-teach in each of these areas.
  2. Summer Camp (mornings): Our eight Laurier B.Ed. students will be supporting an English-language focus of a camp with support from four Canadian teenagers who are accompanying the team. Bachelor of Education students from two universities in the US will be supporting a robotics/science focus.
  3. University English program (afternoons): Our Laurier B.Ed. students are running a conversational English program for Haitian university students who want to improve their English.
  4. Robotics (afternoons): Students from the girls' school that we have been working with will be working with a North American team to continue to build their robotics skills.
A recent exciting development has been a partnership with Desire2Learn to provide an online learning component for the summer institute. Stay tuned for the next blog post that will describe the research project that is accompanying the online learning aspect.
